Work Package 2 – The appraisal of existing solutions, models, tools and devices to assess (the) self-sustained fish population(s) at the test case HPP in each of the four regions [Months: 1-48]

WP2 collects and analyses the available knowledge to assess the ecologic compatibility of HPPs based on case specific indicator fish species with the locally representative and/or endangered fish species. Founded on information from literature, on laboratory work and on Test Case Site applications, available SMTDs will be evaluated for the most relevant impact elements of the HP. The assessment of ecological impact in the Test Case HPPs on habitats, spawning areas, hydro-morphodynamics and on population and of individual impacts due to river fragmentation, upstream     and downstream migration as well as tur-bine mortality of fish, enables to set priorities and to outline the required developments to be conducted in WP3 and evaluated with respect to cost and effectiveness in WP4.

Test Case HPPs in four Focus Regions of differing climatic and ecologic conditions, namely in Scandinavia, the Alps, Iberia and French/Belgium, representing moderate climatic Central European lowlands, will serve as real-world examples to obtain quantitative information. Steered by WP4 and in a scenario modelling process individual strategies for improvement measures at each Test Case site are proposed. Effects are assessed mainly by simulation using existing solutions, methods, tools and Devices (SMTDs). In case no satisfying answers to the challenges are found, this WP applies innovative SMTDs developed in WP3 or requests from WP3 specifically adapted innovative SMTDs for testing. The improvement loop involving this WP as well as WP3 and WP4 serves as building block for cost/effectiveness analysis.
