The FIThydro wiki is a comprehensive collection of mitigation measures, methods, tools and devices for the assessment and measure implementation of fish-friendly hydropower. It also includes practical examples from the FIThydro test cases. The wiki, developed by SINTEF, is now accessible online.

One of the objectives of FIThydro is to catalogue existing and to develop new solutions (mitigation measures), methods, tools and devices (MTDs) to improve conditions for fish while at the same time maintaining hydropower production. To make this information publicly available, the FIThydro wiki has been created as an open access online platform.

Understanding mitigation measures

This wiki presents a catalogue of articles on the main types of mitigation measures that can be used to solve challenges related to environmental flows, habitat, sediment management, and downstream and upstream fish migration. The wiki also describes which methods, tools and devices can be used to plan, implement and monitor mitigation measures.

Each mitigation measure is illustrated with a classification table that specifies elements such as technological readiness level (TLR), which river type the solution is suitable for, which group of fish species it is aimed at, etc. The range of costs associated with implementing a measure is also listed, when known.

Additionally, the FIThydro Decision Support System (DSS) integrates with the wiki. The recommended solutions from the DSS are linked to the corresponding wiki pages. This way, users of the DSS can find more detailed information on potential measures on the wiki.

Supporting decision-making for fish-friendly hydropower

The FIThydro wiki presents a collection of information that is easily accessible online and can support users in selecting the appropriate mitigation measure when the actual problem to mitigate is defined. The wiki also provides information about other relevant FIThydro topics, such as test cases, the DSS, and policy and public acceptance.

The wiki guides the user to potential measures that are able to improve conditions, taking costs of implementation and eventual changes in power production into account. It can support decision-making processes and contribute to a more transparent and easier communication and negotiation through clarification of terms. It also enables a deepening and spreading of knowledge regarding hydropower impacts and mitigation measures.
